Police in the Northern Region have opened investigations into how sophisticated weapons used only by the military were smuggled into a curfew area in Bimbilla in the Nanumba-North District.
The police retrieved the sophisticated battle riffle, G3 and more than 700 guns and ammunitions from several houses despite the imposition of a curfew on the Bimbila township.
The town has been under curfew since the murder of the late overlord of the Nanumbas, Na-Andani Dasana Dawuni.
The Northern Regional Security Council had banned the carrying of any type of ammunition or arms in Bimbila.
But the swoop on Saturday led to the retrieval of 732 AK-47 ammunition, 43 G3 ammunition, one short machine gun, one double barrel gun and 6 AA cartridges among others.
Five people suspected to be linked to the discovery of the arms and ammunition were also arrested.
Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer ASP Ebenezer Tetteh told Joy News the five persons arrested have been sent to Tamale for further interrogations.
