The appearance of giant billboards sporting Nigerian politicians campaigning for Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the impending elections has sparked concern from political scholars.
The billboards located at Danquah Circle and on the Accra-Tema Motorway, were erected by a group calling itself Friends of Jonathan in Diaspora calling on Nigerians living in Ghana to go home and support the Nigerian President.
Africa’s most populous nation will hold general elections on February 14, 2015.
Senior Research Fellow at the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD), Dr. Vladimir Antwi Danso says the development poses a threat to national security and called for the immediate removal of the billboards.
Though Dr. Antwi Danso says he is unsure of the motive behind moves to introduce Nigerian politics in Ghana, he wants government to investigate the development and deal with it as a matter of urgency.
The International Relations expert called for caution in the development because allowing these practices can affect local politics in a negative way.
Meanwhile, a Political Science lecturer, Dr. Bossman Asare says this rather is an innovation that offers an opportunity for Ghanaian politicians to also advertise in other countries.
Dr. Bossman said it could be presumed that the growing Nigerian population in Ghana is one group they cannot ignore.
He said Nigerians have taken advantage of their people in Ghana to campaign here.
Meanwhile, the Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG), says it sees nothing wrong with Nigerians erecting campaign billboards urging their nationals to go back home to participate in an election.
Executive Secretary of the AAG, Francis Dadzie insists the practice does not flout any of the country’s laws.
