There has been another postponement of the reconvening of the first meeting of the third session of the sixth parliament. The resumption date was supposed to be today.
It has been postponed to Tuesday, February 3, 2015 with many political watchers attributing the latest development to the current economic crisis facing the country.
Postponements of reconvening dates for meetings of the current parliament have become a common feature with sometimes the postponements travelling from two to three weeks after the original date had been given.
People are speculating about the ‘no money’ syndrome as the reason forthe latest postponement but checks by Daily Guide indicated that it was necessitated by some important oversight assignments of some committees of the House.
Members on the Committee for Works and Housing for instance, travelled to the three northern regions to inspect works on water projects that had been approved by parliament with a $75 million loan, and were expected to be back yesterday, while members on the Finance Committee were attending a workshop for the whole of last week.
When parliament reconvenes on February 3, it will have a relatively short period to deal with a number of bills before the Easter holidays in the first week of April.
One high point during the first meeting of this session would be the president’s State of the Nation address which is expected to generate passionate debate between the minority New Patriotic Party and the majority National Democratic Congress (NDC).
