In its latest measure to reduce cost, government will soon cut its expenditure on fuel for ministers and other officials by some 30%.
Information Minister Zita Okaikoi disclosed this in a panel discussion on Accra-based Radio Gold’s Alhaji & Alhaji Saturday.
The new policy will include reductions in the volume of fuel allocated to various MDAs including ministers who draw fuel from government depots, Mrs Okaikoi stressed.
All government vehicles would also be branded in the names of the designated ministries, departments and agencies to check indiscriminate use of state vehicles.
Numbers plates of such vehicles are to take on the GV registration, a policy which suffered a setback during the previous administration.
The new measures follow the 30% upward adjustment in fuel prices announced by government Friday.
Following the price hikes, a litre of petrol that sold at Ghp85.7 will now cost GHc1.11. Diesel is also up from GHp86.2 to 1.12; kerosene from GHp66.5 to GHp86.45 and gas will now sell at GHp79.82 from the previous GHp61.4.
Meanwhile the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council has announced patrons of commercial vehicles may have to pay 17% more than they used to pay.
Pressure group Committee for Joint Action (CJA) has criticised government over the increases.
A leading member of the group, Kwesi Pratt Junior, has chided government over the increases, serving notice members of the group would meet later next week to decide their next line of action.
Mr Pratt believes the Mills-led government could develop more creative ideas to deal with the spiralling cost of fuel in the country.
