Volta Regional Police Commander has explained why his men responded to distress calls at St.Pauls High School (SPACO) to quell a riot but ended up killing a student in a stray bullet incident instead.
Admitting that “people have a right to ask questions” the Police Commander Police Peterkin Gynae told Joy News that the officers were on patrol with their weapons when they were called to immediately move to the campus – a scene of riotous action.
“Patrolmen [were] going around town. The officer just called them to come and assist, instantaneously. They were carrying the arms patrolling before they [were] asked to go there to assist, it was not a planned thing”, DCOP Police Peterkin Gynae explained.
The Police found a chaotic scene at the senior high school, where students went on rampage, destroying school properties when authorities refused to allow them to beat up the alleged homosexual students.
He described the use of firearms as the first response to a student riot as appalling, adding that "They went out of their way to do that. We are all appalled by the behaviour of our men."
According to the DCOP, it was up to the IGP's investigations to determine who takes responsibility for the death. "Whoever should be held responsible will be held responsible," he said.
The name of the officer responsible has not been released.
Police PRO DSP Cephas Arthur has said that the police officers involved in the shooting incident have been detained at the regional police headquarters in Ho and investigations have commenced earnestly into the entire incident.
