Management of the University of Ghana has confirmed that one of its students has tested positive of the coronavirus.
The Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, Dr Badu Sarkodie made the announcement when he addressed the press on Sunday, March 15.
He said the student travelled to the US for a family emergency but tested positive for the virus days after she returned to Ghana.
This account was corroborated by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Ebenezer Oduro Owusu.
Addressing the University community on Sunday, the said the recorded case involves “one of our non-resident students who returned from an international trip.”
“A few cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in Ghana including a case involving one of our non-resident students who returned from an international trip. I am using this platform to reach out to all our students and other members of the university community, to reassure you of management’s commitment to ensure measure in the best interest of all,” he said.
He then urged students, staff and the general public to remain calm as trace contact investigations are being carried out.
Meanwhile, the establishment further issued a statement signed by the registrar that it has canceled lectures on all its campuses nationwide with immediate effect until further notice.
The statement indicated that students and staff who reside outside its “campuses and are currently off-campus should keep away from the campuses until they are asked to return.”
