Head of Disease Control Unit of the Kaneshie Polyclinic, Priscilla Kyerewaa, has called for psychological assistance for persons who have been quarantined by the state in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Madam Kyerewaa said the attitude being exhibited by some of the placed under quarantine suggests they require urgent psychological help.

She made the appeal on Adom FM’s current affairs show, Burning Issues, on Wednesday, March 25, 2020.

The Disease Control expert adds that some of the persons quarantined believe they should not have been quarantined because they only picked relatives from the airport. 

Others are also rejecting the choice of food being provided and asking for their preferences.

She believes all these can be addressed with proper psychological assistance.

As part of government’s measures to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, President Nana Akufo-Addo announced the closure of all borders and a 14-day mandatory quarantine of all persons who will arrive in the country within the period.

The implementation of this directive has meant that some people who returned from outside the country have been put in hotels across the country for a 14-day period.

Madam Kyerewaa also asked the government to consider providing other logistics for the persons placed under quarantine -- such as clothing -- since some of them only visited with one cloth before being put under the lockdown.

Miss Kyerewaa, however, supported a call for partial nationwide lockdown by the state in the two main capitals, Accra and Kumasi.

She acknowledged the challenges that would befall a developing nation like Ghana under lockdown but asked the government to put measures in place to ensure the pandemic does not spread.

As at 10 pm GMT, on March 25, Ghana has recorded 93 confirmed cases with four deaths and no recovery.
