A representative of Wikipedia in Ghana has revealed that with all the historical data currently available on Wikipedia, about only 2% are on the people living in Africa.
Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia created and edited by volunteers around the world and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, is the world's largest collection of information available on the internet.
According to Wikimedian of the Year (2017) Felix Nartey, the platform is willing to give Ghanaian writers the luxury of providing solid information about the country and its history, to be featured on the platform.
Speaking in an interview with Emefa on Prime Morning, Felix Nartey disclosed that Wikimedia Foundation has chosen Founder’s Day to receive the information from the writers.
"We have to tell our own stories because if we don't, somebody will do it with the wrong narrative. We chose Founders' Day because in this COVID-19 era, we thought about how people could actually relive the Founders' Day Movement and continue to celebrate our forefathers.”
The writing contest is being headed by 'Open Foundation', which is known for giving writers the chance to pen down thought-provoking and educative pieces to support a better course, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and with the support of media outlets like Joy Prime.
