Running mate to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, Prof Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang says government goofed by providing candidates of the just ended West African Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) past questions.
Speaking on her working visit to IMANI Africa Thursday, the former Education Minister noted that the move by government was not the best way to improve the performance of the finalists.
She believed that provision learning materials, investing in more educational infrastructure coupled with strict supervision would rather cushion the students acquire better grades during examinations.
“Achieving good results from our students cannot be achieved by buying past questions. We can only do that by grooming the children well, by supporting the teachers, by putting methods in place for strict supervision and accountability.
“We all know that accountability goes everywhere so by ensuring that the head master or mistress understand his or her role as the leader of the academic experience of the students, so if it is workshop that they need give it to them,” she stated.
The former Education Minister added that the next NDC administration will revamp the public education sector for Ghanaian parents to have confidence in the Educational system again.
According to her, the NDC flagbearer, John Mahama has established a plan to review initiatives that has caused the public schools particularly, the basic level ones lag behind.
On his part, Vice president of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil observed that the implementation of the Free SHS policy is collapsing the economy.
He argued that government must review the exiting policy otherwise, the growth of the Ghanaian economy would stagnate.
“I am not rich but I absolutely should not be taking government’s money to be paying for boarding school of my child.
“if you travel to the advanced countries, it is free but it is day school and it is based on district level. Students go to the school that they can easily walk or drive to and return home for which reason we [IMANI Africa] commends you [NDC] on the e-block policy,” he said.
