The Chieftaincy Forum Africa has expressed concern over what it says is the diminishing morality in the country’s chieftaincy institution.
In a release signed by Spokesperson Philip Mensah, they lamented some actions of chief that has contributed to the current problem.
The body explained that the institution which was “once revered for its strong moral standards which include but not limited to anti-corruption standards and high ethical values” is losing that hallmark.
“We, are however, worried that our chiefs who constitute the main moral paragons and critical voices in the fight against this monster of corruption are themselves being caught in the web of it by accepting bribes from all kinds of sources,” the statement read.
They alleged that some chiefs who are involved in such ethically wrong practices are also in the act of influencing their colleagues in order to favour politicians.
The result of these acts according to the statement prevents Chiefs from being impartially critical to government as is expected of them.
“By their indulgence in these immoral acts, they are denigrating their sacred stools and skins as well as making nonsense of the great oaths of office they took in the presence of their subjects,” they said.
However, Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu and Togbe Afede XIV among others were applauded for their efforts to maintain national interest at the heart of their dealings.
“We respect them for their defence of the truth even when it is not too popular or pleasing to the ear. They deserve our commendation and national celebration, especially as truth is becoming a scarce commodity in public office and private life. Both history and posterity will judge them favourably,” the statement said.
