The Executive Director of Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah says death threats on journalists should not be taken lightly.
His comment comes after the Chronicles Newspaper Editor, Emmanuel Akli revealed that he has been receiving death threats from an Immigration Officer whom he did a story on.
According to Mr Akli, although the issue was reported to the police in 2019, nothing has been done about it so far.
In reaction to this, Mr Braimah who spoke in an interview on Joy FM's Midday News described the rate at which media practitioners in the country are being threatened for doing their job as 'worrying'.
For him, the development goes against the tenets of Press Freedom that has been clearly stipulated in the 1992 Constitution.
"It is worrying because not too long ago, someone who worked in the media had his life taken away and as we speak nothing has happened; no judgment for the family. We don't know where the investigation has reached so far.
"So yes, it is a worrying development not because the person in context is a journalist, but any individual act all who faces death threat is a matter that should be taken seriously because once you are dead, that is it," he stressed.
Mr Braimah also commended the Chronicles Newspaper Editor for opening up on the death threaths he has been receiving.
According to him, "at least people now know about it and the perpetrator would know that should anything happen to Mr Akli at this stage, he would be held responsible."
