The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), James Oppong Boanuh to update the public about the ongoing investigations into all the electoral violence recorded in parts of the country during the 2020 elections.
In a post-election observation statement signed by its National Coordinator, Albert Arhin indicated that although the atmosphere after the election has been fairly peaceful, the pockets of violence recorded must not be ignored.
As part of its recommendations, CODEO called on the IGP and the Ghana Police Service to keep the general public apprised on the status of all election-related investigations
“As in the previous cases of election-related violence recorded during the voter registration exercise and in line with public accountability, CODEO calls on the Inspector-General of Police and the Ghana Police Service to inform the public about the status of investigations into all election-related violence recorded during the elections and in the post-election period.”
The election observers further commended all candidates who are challenging the outcome of the election through legal means, adding that “candidates, political parties, and their supporters to cooperate with the courts to determine the merits or otherwise of election petitions.”
Commenting on the ongoing election petition, CODEO advised all stakeholders, media, and the general public to be circumspect in their discussions of the case so as not to jeopardize legitimate processes of the court.
CODEO deployed its representatives to some 30 constituencies that were heavily featured in the 2020 elections, as a result of contestable results or other election-related violence.
Meanwhile the outfit says is still observing the environment post-election and will duly share its findings with the public when necessary.
