Some names from the quarters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the business community have popped up in the contesting for membership of the Council of State.
These include former MP for Ningo Prampram, Enoch Teye Mensah and the former Kumbungu MP, Ras Mubarak.
The Council plays critical role in the governance of the country, as it is enjoined by the 1992 Constitution (Chapter 9, Article 89) to "counsel the President in the performance of his functions."

Other personalities include former Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank, Alhassan Andani, Nii Kotei Dzani, a journalist and immediate past Bono Regional representative Kojo Agyenim Boateng, former member representing the Ashanti Region the Akrofosohene, Nana Owusu Achiaw Brempong and Eunice Jacqueline Buah, a businesswoman, who is seeking re-election for the Western regional slot.
The Council of State is also to among other things, “consider and advise the President or any other authority in respect of any appointment which is required by the Constitution or any other law to be made in accordance with the advice of, or in consultation with the council”.
Reports say in all, about 102 candidates from 16 regions filed to contest the regional slots of the Council of State on February 12, 2021 at the close of nominations on February 4.
