The President of the Ghana Association of Doctors in Residency (GADOR) has revealed that there are only five beds available for people with critical Covid-19 cases at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
Dr Ben Hammond said the situation is alarming because KATH is the only facility that has the capacity to attend to critically ill patients in the Ashanti Region.
Currently, there are 23 beds in the facility, 18 of which are marked for moderate-severe Covid-19 patients while five beds have been set aside for critically ill patients.
He revealed this during an interview with JoyNews’ Daniel Dadzie on the Prime Morning show on Thursday.
According to him, patients with moderate-severe Covid-19 cases are being handled at other medical centres such as the Kumasi South Hospital.
“We realised that only Komfo Anokye teaching hospital that has the capacity to attend to critically ill patients in the region, the rest of the facilities including Kumasi South Hospital and the others are supporting with the moderate severe ones.
Additionally, the President of GADOR stated that the appalling situation necessitated the Ghana Medical Association at the Ashanti Division to hold a meeting with the aim of fixing the problem of lack of beds in the Region.
Mr Hammond's statement follows the surge of Covid-19 cases in the country.
Meanwhile, there are 1273 active cases of Covid-19 in the Ashanti Region.
