Entertainment Pundit Ola Michael says the failure of the movie industry should not be blamed on the absence of digitisation.
Speaking to Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, he said that although digital platforms for movie streaming have become the norm, not every Ghanaian can afford it because of the amount of data involved.
“The reason why digitisation cannot be the only solution for us is that one the amount of data expended in the watching of a film is more than how much you would use to listen to music.”
“For music, you can have just about 5 to 10 megabyte of data but for film, you are talking bout gigs and the MTN ¢10 data package is about 900 megabyte.”
Ola Michael said that it is important to have Ghanaian content reach every citizen without solely depending on digital platforms.
He stated that before Covid-19 hit many people were warming up to the idea of seeing Ghanaian movies in theatres.
The movie producer explained that the theatre was a no-go area for some Ghanaians years ago who assumed it was a preserve of the elite.
However, from the year 2019 to 2020 before Covid-19 “we were gathering ourselves into the theatre scene,” he said.
Ola Michael asked movie consumers not to berate producers and creatives who are working to find other means of distributing their movies other than using streaming platforms.
