Daughter of former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo has acknowledged Ghana as her second home after Côte d'Ivoire.
In an interview on JoyNews' Super Morning Show Friday, Marie-Patrice Gbagbo disclosed that she and a few family members are seeking refuge in Ghana and have been living here since April 2011.
"Basically that was what we chose to do. We did inform the Ghanaian government that we’re here. But we decided that it was best to remain discrete."
She told host Benjamin Akakpo that the family decided to opt for a quiet life instead of being exposed to controversies that could have come along from sharing their whereabouts.
"We’ve been here working, taking the kids to school, coming back, going to church. Just doing our own thing."
Former President Laurent Gbagbo was the President of Côte d'Ivoire from 2000 until his arrest in April 2011. His arrest came four months after refusing to step down from office after losing the 2010 general elections.
Recounting the experience, her daughter said, "It’s been something worth remembering. Something worth drawing lessons from".
She said that as a staunch Christian family, they believe that "in all things that whatever happens to you, there’s a reason behind, there’s a wisdom behind."
Opening up about the experience the family witnessed during the arrest and exile of the former Ivorian President, Marie-Patrice said they were traumatized and the family had to be steadfast in their faith in building the family.
"Like I said, drawing lessons. Lots of lessons. It’s been challenging. But we survived. We survived it. We grew stronger. We are happy. It couldn’t break us."
Recounting memories from Côte d'Ivoire, Marie-Patrice Gbagbo said that the family did not lose anything when they left the country as far as character is concerned.
Responding to the question of whether the family will return back to their native country, she said Côte d'Ivoire will always be their home.
"We don’t know when we will go back, but by God’s Grace, we will go and rebuild when we get there," she said.
