The arrest and alleged brutality of a CITI TV/FM journalist featured in most bulletins this week. Caleb Kudah who was arrested by national security operatives for filming abandoned state vehicles at a national security facility, says the operatives pushed and kicked him in the groins. He also claims he was slapped repeatedly by the operatives till he felt dizzy.

This action was condemned by Private legal practitioner Samson Lardi Anyenini who spoke on the Super Morning Show first by asking ‘is that how to arrest anybody?’ Mr. Anyenini went on to say "you have no business to lift a finger on these young guys even not in situations where they are resisting arrest."

The minority in parliament also waded in the matter. Speaking to JoyNews on the sidelines of the eid-ul-fitr celebration in the Northern region, minority leader Haruna Iddrisu noted "Nana Addo Danqauh and his NPP government are reducing government to a police state, and that is not acceptable."

He went further to add, "I least expected that this will happen under Nana Akufo-Addo as president of Ghana." Mr Iddrisu then offered an advice to the president ‘I think the excesses are getting too much, this government must watch it.’

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah visited Citi FM, where a colleague of Caleb; Zoe Abu-Baidoo Addo was also picked up because Caleb sent the videos he filed to her. Mr. Nkrumah talked about the investigations the national security has assured it would conduct on the matter. He told managers of the station, "that enquiry is a serious enquiry that should get to the bottom of it. Find out if these allegations are true, the persons who are responsible for it be held to account. No ifs. No buts."

When President Akufo-Addo joined Muslims in Ghana to commemorate the end of the Ramadan fast, he took the opportunity to speak about the row which has been ongoing between the Wesley Girls High School and some Muslim parents over the school's refusal to allow Muslim girls fast during the Ramadan. The President advised, "I would urge that we do not turn the schools as the places to fight ideological and religious battles."

On the fight against illegal mining, Ashanti regional minister Simon Osei Mensah proposed that halting the menace can be best achieved through a name and shame approach of government appointees involved in the act. At a stakeholder meeting in the region to discuss how to end the menace, Mr, Osei Mensah was emphatic when he noting "we cannot go against the principles and policies of our government. If Osei Mensah is found involved in the process of illegal mining, he should he named and shamed."

Meanwhile, the National Association of Small Scale Miners is unhappy with the military for allegedly burning excavators and equipment of its members whom they say are engaged in the practice legally. Spokesperson of the association, Abdul Razak Alhassan had this question for the government, "we want clarification on the president’s directive on the military. Did the president order the military to burn the excavators on-site or cease them?"
The Lands And Natural Resources Minister Samuel Abu Jinapr justified the burning of the equipment found on illegal mining sites by stating "the use of excavators for mining on our water bodies is an extraordinary problem which requires extraordinary measures to deal with it"

Lots of communities in some parts of the country complained of a lack of potable water. Residents in the Krachi East Municipality in the Oti region complained of having no access to potable water. Residents in Nkwanta North District in the Oti Region also say they’ve been forced to rely on contaminated water bodies for use despite the unhealthy nature "we see worms and other particles in the water but because we have no option we use it like that."

The Volta region saw two demonstrations this week.

The first was in Keta where residents demanded accountability from the Municipal Assembly especially on reclaimed lands for those affected by the impact of sea erosion. Head of finance at the municipal assembly Gilbert kEkli responded by saying "these allegations are not true"

The other demonstration was about deplorable road in Afloa. The residemts were unhappy about the diamond cement roads describing it as a death trap causing respiration problems among others. MCE for Ketu South, Elliot Edem Agbenorwu who received a petition from the residents explained the road needs a redesigning but assured their concerns would be forwarded to the President.

Chief of Tafo Nana Agyen-Frimpong Ababio was furious when he called a press conference to question why the MP there, Vincent Ekow Assafua failed to honour an invitation for the commissioning of an Astroturf.

Surgeons at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s main theatre took to social media, protesting poor working conditions there. But head of the Surgery Directorate Dr. Joseph Oppong said the concerns of the surgeons are being addressed and urged them to also assist the authorities there fix the problems raised.
