Country Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Niyi Ojuolape has urged victims of gender-based violence, to patronize the Orange Support Centre, a virtual system that has been designed to assist them.
In an interview with Mamavi Owusu Aboaggye on the AM Show Monday May 24, Mr Ojuolape indicated that although Ghana has provided for the prosecution of individuals who engage in sexual and gender-based violence, the Orange Support Centre will provide a safe space for victims to rehabilitate.
“Last year when Covid-19 hit the country, we established a contact line in support of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit [DOVVSU] for people to call and report cases of domestic and gender-based violence.
The contact number was made available for people to call in so we can pass it across to DOVVSU to investigate and possibly prosecute offenders.
“There is also the need to cater for the victims of violence which is very important to us. That is why the slogan of Orange Support Centre states that “providing support to survivors of gender-based violence,” Mr Ojuolape stated.

He continued that, “We want to move victims to become survivors. So the kind of support that we provide is sometimes psychological, medical and legal,”
As an organization that provides virtual assistance, he indicated that once an individual reaches out to them through their contact line (800-111-222), they are able to recommend or provide the required assistance immediately.
According to him, the support unit has so far received cases beyond their expectations, however, they are able to provide the needed assistance to the victims.
