Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah says security personnel were deployed on Monday night to maintain law and order in some Senior High Schools in the Ashanti Region.
There were disturbances Monday night at the St. Louis SHS and Kumasi Girls' Senior High Schools (SHS).
This followed a late Ghana Education Service (GES) Directive that reversed an earlier communication asking third-year students to go home for mid-term vacation.
This was after the Ghana Health Service (GHS) warned that allowing students to go home could potentially worsen the already worrying covid-19 spread.
The Regional Minister says the students disagreed with the directive resulting in disturbances requiring the intervention of security personnel.
“The Ghana Health Service also observes the rate at which the Delta Variant is spreading and feels it will be better for the students to remain in school.
"This is where the disagreement started between the students and school authorities. So we asked the security to go there to maintain peace and order,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is holding a crunch meeting with health officials in the Ashanti region to review the last 6 months and decide how to stem the surge in Covid-19 cases.
“This is something we do every six months, but this particular one has coincided with the time we are experiencing an increase.
"And so we take stock of where we are, look at what strategies that need to maintained, what needs to be improved”, Director General of the Service told host of PM Express Evans Mensah.
