Police have arrested Kofi Tei, a farmer based in Nkurankan near Koforidua in the Eastern Region, after the Ho-bound vehicle on which he was traveling with a large consignment of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana, was intercepted at Kporvi Barrier in the Volta Region. The driver of the Hundai Urvan mini bus with registration number GN2661N has also been arrested. The pile of leaves, compressed into a large suitcase, locked and deposited in the boot of the vehicle, apparently to outwit the police, was being conveyed by Tei from his location to Ho. Kofi Tei, obviously a middle-aged man with strands of gray hair, stunned people at the Anyirawase Police Station where he was later sent, when he told the police that he was 29 years of age. Detective Lance Corporal Anthony Hanyabui told DAILY GUIDE that at around 11am on Sunday, June 21, 2009, the police at the Kporvi Barrier, as part of their routine checks, stopped the Hundai mini bus and conducted a search on it, leading to the discovery of the bag. Suspicious, he said, the police asked for the owner of the bag, thereby prompting the driver to point at Kofi. The suspect, however, denied ownership of the bag, until he was searched by the police, and the key and handle of the bag were found on him. Police, he said, opened the bag only to find out that it contained the dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. Detective Lance Corporal Hanyabui said the suspect alleged that he had been asked by his brother to deliver the consignment to one Usifu in Ho. He disclosed that the suspect took off from Nkurankan around 6am to Kpong, where he boarded a Ho-bound vehicle, but on reaching Asikuma, the driver decided to discontinue with the journey with the excuse that the number of passengers on board the vehicle were not enough. He said the passengers including the suspect were later made to board the Hundai mini bus, unknowing to him that luck was going to elude him, until the eagle eyes of police caught the bag at the Kporvi Barrier. Both Kofi and the driver (name withheld), who claimed to be unaware of what was concealed in the bag until it was intercepted, are in police custody pending further investigations into the case.
