Vodafone Ghana Foundation, the charity arm of Vodafone Ghana. has organised upskill training on science and technology-related courses for 150 girls to mark the 2022 International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
The beneficiaries were trained in robotics, electronics, coding, web development and application to accelerate gender equity and improve access and participation in science for women and girls in Ghana.
Aside from the training, the telco has awarded scholarship packages to 30 young girls.
Head of Vodafone Ghana Foundation, Reverend Amaris Nana Adjei Perbi said the scholarship will increase women’s engagement in Science and Technology.
“The scholarship will provide technical support to young girls. In addition to this, we will mentor them and ensure that those who will progress to the next level are given an opportunity to work with Vodafone Ghana.
"This is our way to sustainably groom the younger ones into the working space. It’s not that we are just picking them anyhow or anywhere but we are making sure their knowledge in STEM is well-groomed”.
Reverend Perbi added, “We are also able to guide them so that they don’t just make choices but they are able to be accountable for their choices. The STEM programme has really come to groom the entire Ghanaian population and it is worth participating”.
February birthday stars; Media personality, Stacy Amoateng, Head Agency Banking for Ecobank Group, Jacqueline Mpare and High-life and Afrobeat singer-songwriter, Kuami Eugene partnered with the Foundation to provide career guidance to the girls.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science celebrated on February 11, is implemented by UNESCO in collaboration with institutions and civil society partners that aim to promote women and girls in science.
This Day is an opportunity to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls.
Gender equality is a global priority for UNESCO, and the support of young girls, their education and their full ability to make their ideas heard are levers for development and peace.
