An economics lecturer at the Kumasi Polytechnic, Thomas Kusi Boafo says Former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor and former Attorney General Betty Mould-Iddrisu should squarely be blamed for Ghana's current economic challenges.
Mr. Kusi Boafo alleged: “Dr Kwabena Duffour and Betty Mould are behind Ghana’s current economic problem, they have short changed Ghana."
Speaking Monday on Adom FM‘s Burning Issues current affairs program hosted by Afia pokua, he suggested that the two former public office holders ought to pay for messing up the country.
“If there are two individuals I can single out that if anybody wants to curse for Ghana’s predicament then they should be persons to be cursed, even the next generations should curse them for the current economic woes”, he added.
Mr. Boafo explained the country’s current economic crisis is due to excessive borrowing and what he described as unnecessary judgments debt payments which were administered both by Dr Duffuor and Mrs Mould-Iddrisu.
He said the current Finance Minister Seth Terkper cannot be blamed for the economic mess.
Some members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) recently mounted pressure on President John Mahama to sack Seth Terkper, arguing that the reforms and austerity measures being introduced by the Finance Minister have worsened the already deteriorating socio-economic conditions in the country.
But Mr. Boafo said Seth Terkper has performed far better than Dr Duffour if a critical assessment of the former is putting in place to ensure value for money and he must be commended for his effort.
He said the president must acknowledge and commend Seth Terkpe for being bold at telling the truth about the economy and putting strict rules at addressing the problem.
The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) recently raised alarm at the current rate of government borrowing and has warned Ghana is retrogressing to 1985 – a painful period of near economic collapse.
