The Ghana Water Company says it will not accept blame for the recent flooding in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region and its environs.

Several homes were submerged leaving over one thousand persons displaced after days of torrential rains in the area as well as the spillage of the Weija Dam.

Although the National Disaster Management Organisation attributes the incident to the overflow of the Densu River, residents and some local authorities say the spillage of the Ghana Water Company’s Weija Dam could have complicated the situation.

When asked about their side of the story, Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Dr. Clifford Braimah said the flooding was caused by encroachment on the buffer zones around the dam.

Given the forecast by the Ghana Meteo Agency of more rains in the coming days, Dr. Braimah told Blessed Sogah, host of The Pulse on JoyNews that settlers around the dam would have themselves to blame if water from the dam is spilled once more.

“Nobody can blame Ghana Water Company” he said on Tuesday while adding that although full spillage was not done, the level of flooding was unprecedented.

“What it means is that the buffer zone has been encroached upon and if you put a concrete wall across the water, it will find its way to communities that shouldn’t be affected.”

Touching on what the water company intends to do about the recent happenings, Dr. Braimah indicated that National Security has been sufficiently briefed on the matter hence they will await further action from the security agencies.
