The Corporate Communications Manager for Vivo Energy Ghana says female engagement in mainstream politics and political activities can be increased through economic and educational empowerment.
Shirley Tony Kum argues that the involvement of women in politics can only have positive outcomes for the population.
“There is nothing wrong with women aspiring for a political role,” she said.
Sharing data at hand, the communication expert revealed that the continent of Africa has 24 per cent representation in Parliament, a number she believes must be increased exponentially in the next few years.
In an interview with Rev Erskine on YFM's Y Leaderboard Series, she quoted Kofi Annan's popular "the only tool for development is the empowerment of women".
“We may not want to partake in politics because women think it is not our field. But I believe women's representation results in tangible gains for democracy, inducing a greater representation and responsiveness to the needs of citizens. It also helps achieve gender equality and affects ranges of policy issues,” she added.
