The Director-General of the State Interest and Governance Authority has defended Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta against accusations of mismanagement.

Addressing the media about the state of agencies report on Thursday, Mr Edward Boateng stated that the country has not been fair to the Finance Minister over his handling of the economy.

He claims that the Finance Minister is being blamed for the ineffectiveness of some state managers who seek assistance from the Finance Ministry.

He added that these entities now seek assistance from SIGA. This, he said is unsustainable and has to change.

“I feel very sorry when I hear everybody talking about the Finance Minister and pushing him as if he spent the money on his family. It is because a lot of these entities in Ghana are not run properly, so as the disbursement officer he becomes the fall guy. But seriously, are we being fair? Because people are running these organisations and running them down and they are going to him or the Ministry of Finance,” he said.

It would be recalled that there has been a number of calls for the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta to resign or be sacked over his inability to manage the economy.

Also, the Majority Members of Parliament (MPs) numbering about 80, held a press conference to impress on the President to relieve his cousin of the responsibility of managing the national purse or risk losing their support for government business going forward.

The NDC MPs also filed a censure motion to that effect following the Majority MP’s demands to have the Finance Minister removed.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagban admitting the censure motion, referred it to an 8-member ad-hoc committee, the outcome of which will be debated and voted on.

On Thursday, the censure motion was voted on, but the Minority could not gather the required 183 votes from MPs to succeed.
