The Ministry of Education (MoE) has ordered public universities to refund monies paid above the 15% increment in fees.
The Ministry says those receipts were “illegal” and immediate measures must be taken to refund same.
According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ministry, Kwasi Kwarteng, the Ministry expects the refunds to be made without delay to the students.
“The expectation is that, any person that paid more than the approved fees should have his or her money refunded and this, the University authorities agreed to.
The approved fees is 15% per charge so if you charge anybody more than that, it is only fair that, you make a refund”.
On Thursday, January 5, the Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum directed Management of the University of Ghana (UG) to comply with the 15 percent increment in tertiary fees.
His order followed an engagement with all public universities on the tertiary fees brouhaha.
It could be recalled that the Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC) directed all public tertiary institutions to review fees for the next academic year by a maximum 15 percent increment.
However, some students of the University of Ghana have accused the Management of the school of charging more than the approved fees for the next academic year.
According to the Ministry, its investigations proved that UG is implementing about a 37% increment of fees.
