The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has declared that the Accra-Tema Motorway, no longer meets the true definition of a motorway.
Senior Manager of Planning and Programme Directorate at the Authority, Henry Asomani, said this in an interview with Blessed Sogah on JoyNews' The Pulse on Monday.
He explained that a motorway, by definition, must be a controlled-access highway designed for high-speed traffic and without access for pedestrians, bicycles, or other non-motorised forms of transportation.
The Accra-Tema Motorway, however, allows for other forms of transportation and does not have proper safety measures in place, therefore failing to meet the definition of a motorway.
His comment was in response to the recent JoyNews series "The Deadly Highway," which highlights the dangerous conditions and high number of road accidents on the highway.
The poor state of the motorway has been a source of concern for many Ghanaians following the failure of government to fulfill its promises to make the highway safe.
Mr. Asomani stated that the National Road Safety Authority recognises the need for improved road infrastructure, and is working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the necessary steps are taken to improve road safety.
The poor state of the motorway has also been a cause for concern for commercial transport operators.
Spokesperson for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Samuel Amoah who also spoke on the same show, demanded that the government fulfills its promise to fix the highway, as the poor conditions are taking a toll on operations for transport operators.
