Deputy Majority Whip, Habib Iddrisu, says the time has come for the Ghana Card to be embraced as the only identification document for voters’ registration.
According to him, the Minority’s opposition to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) new constitutional instrument on the basis of the exclusion of the guarantor system is unfounded and unprogressive.
The EC has been trying to lay before parliament a new constitutional instrument that will make the Ghana Card the only identification material for registering for a voters’ card.
According to the EC, this system will prevent non-nationals and minors from getting onto the voters’ roll.
However, the Minority insist the abandonment of the guarantor system will disenfranchise millions of Ghanaians who are yet to be issued a Ghana Card.
Reacting to the Minority’s opposition, the Tolon MP argued that the EC’s guarantor system just as the Chairperson, Jean Mensa had stated has been abused in the past.
He said that some nefarious individuals have become ‘contractors’ for the guarantor system and have aided minors and non-nationals to get onto the voters’ roll.
The exclusion of the EC’s guarantor system from the C.I. he said, will foolproof the registration process.
“The Ghana Card is something that is being accepted at many places, so why don’t we all try to have it rather than talking about guarantor system. Because the guarantor system, people have become contractors for the guarantor system, people don’t care about the consequences, they just want to make sure that they help somebody register.
“They dump the consequences, and when there are problems or they’re going to be prosecuted you see chiefs, you see opinion leaders going to beg that ‘o, this one this person didn’t do that’. It has come at a time as a country we have to make a decision,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Minority in parliament have insisted that should the EC lay the C.I before the house without the guarantor system, they will vehemently oppose it.
