The 4th edition of the Rugby League 13’s Championship has been launched by the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) in a beautiful ceremony on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at the University of Ghana Sports Directorate.
The tournament will run for 20 weeks, from April 23 to September 31, 2023, at the University of Ghana, under the theme, OUR LEAGUE. The aim is to promote unity, good health, and well-being through rugby league.
The launch of the championship was an exciting event, featuring a team parade, a trophy unveiling, Man-of -The-match prize package and speeches by dignitaries. It drew a large turnout of Rugby League fans, players, and officials.
Mr Riddick Alibah, the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the RLFG, stressed the championship's importance and the anticipated impact it will have on Rugby League development in Ghana. Mr Alibah also emphasized the need to create more opportunities for young people to participate in rugby league to promote good health and well-being.
The tournament which has generated a lot of excitement among Rugby League fans in Ghana will feature five teams Accra Bears, Accra Panthers, Bulls, Nungua Tigers and Ghana Skolars. Technical Manager, Marshall Nortey highlighted the significance of the championship, as it includes women and youth categories thus engendering equitable inclusion and youth development in rugby league. The championship provides an opportunity for women and young people to showcase their talent and compete at the highest level, which will help grow the sport's popularity in Ghana.
"The successful launch of the championship, which promises to be an exciting and competitive event that will showcase the best of Ghanaian Rugby League talent and Skolars will look forward to keeping the trophy once more". A rep from Ghana Skolars RLC remarked.
The RLG will organise a walk on March 18, 2023, to invite sports lovers to join the 13s Championship kickoff on April 23, 2023, with Nungua Tigers and Ghana Skolars playing the first match of the season.
