Countries in Africa are being urged to explore nuclear energy sources to help deal with the continent’s energy supply deficit.
According to Patricia Nanteza, coordinator of RePlanet Africa, a grassroots NGO working on climate action and clean energy solutions, some 600 million Africans lack access to reliable energy sources. RePlanet Africa observes Africa is a continent teeming with potential and addressing its growing energy needs is crucial for sustainable development.
“We know that nuclear power offers a viable solution to the continent's energy deficit without exacerbating the negative effects of climate change - thanks to its low carbon footprint," she said in a statement.
The statement said in a bid to foster intellectual engagement and promote sustainable energy solutions, RePlanet Africa has launched an essay writing competition on nuclear energy in Africa.
“Open to university students across the African continent, this competition aims to ignite a dialogue and encourage innovative thinking regarding the role of nuclear energy in Africa's future,” Ms Nanteza said.
“With a focus on nuclear energy, this competition invites undergraduate students to explore and share their perspectives on how nuclear power can contribute to Africa's energy mix while considering the impact on climate change, economic growth as well as household livelihoods and incomes,” the statement said.
RePlanet Africa says the competition seeks to empower the next generation of leaders and thinkers to actively shape Africa's energy future.
“This competition provides an ideal platform for university students to delve into the subject matter, contribute to the ongoing discourse on sustainable energy solutions and showcase their research skills, critical thinking and innovative ideas,” the statement said.
The winning African student and his or her collaborating lecturer will enjoy a 3-day trip to a nuclear power plant in South Africa, the Netherlands, or the UK and a laptop each.
