In a significant boost to their preparations for the upcoming 2023 Africa Para Games, the Ghana Wheelchair Basketball team has secured vital assistance from the non-profit organisation, Sports Equity Lab.
This partnership is set to provide essential support to ensure the team's success in the competition.
As a tangible demonstration of their commitment, Sports Equity Lab has collaborated with the Seed Foundation to procure branded kits for the team, which will serve as their official jerseys throughout the tournament.
These distinctive and visually appealing kits were unveiled during a press conference held in Accra on Friday, September 1, 2023, and will be officially presented to the team on Sunday, September 3, 2023.
Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu, the founder of Sports Equity Lab, spoke at the press conference and shared the organization's belief in the potential of the wheelchair basketball team.
She referred to them as "rough diamonds" and emphasized that with the right support and investment, the team has the potential to become one of the continent's best.
Pops Mensah Bonsu, a retired basketball player and the president of Seed Ghana, used this occasion to call for increased support for lesser-funded sporting disciplines within the country.
He stressed the importance of organizations like his and the media in raising awareness about para-sporting disciplines and providing athletes with opportunities to excel.
He underlined that this initiative is geared towards a common goal of assisting physically challenged individuals in society through the medium of sport.
Emmanuel Donkor, the president of the Ghana Wheelchair Basketball Federation, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Seed Ghana and Sports Equity for their generous donation. He highlighted that this gesture would serve as a strong motivational factor for his team, inspiring them to perform exceptionally well during the tournament.
The inaugural Africa Para Games are set to commence on Sunday, September 3, 2023, with high expectations that both the male and female wheelchair basketball teams will bring home medals for the country.
