Today, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare is expected to appear before the ad-hoc committee probing the alleged tape plotting his removal from office.
Dr Dampare during this appearance will be required to respond to some allegations that have been leveled against him by some of the earlier witnesses of the committee.
The chairman of the committee, Samuel Atta Akyea made this known in a JoyNews interview on Sunday, September 10.
“On Tuesday, all the individuals (Chief Daniel Bugri Naabu, Supt. George L. Asare, (COP) George Alex Mensah, and Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyebi) … will come back with their lawyers."
“Also, the most prominent person whose name has been bandied about, the IGP himself should also come with his lawyers.”
Mr Atta Akyea emphasised the hearing would be done in-camera. He insisted that there were issues in the hearing that needed to be prevented from coming out in the public to protect national security.
“Some serious allegations have been made in public, but the substance of the allegations has not been made in public. That is to say, the evidential support for those allegations is what we are going to unearth, so which piece of evidence that we’ll give to the public that will not hurt national security, we’ll exercise that discretion,” he added.
On July 25, the Speaker of Parliament named Abuakwa South MP, Samuel Atta-Akyea as the chairperson of a 7-member ad-hoc committee to probe the recently leaked controversial audio in which voices are heard clandestinely plotting to oust the Inspector General of Police.
The viral audio, which revealed a supposed conspiracy by a senior police officer and a leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare from office, resulted in a debate on the floor of Parliament with the Minority calling for a forensic audit.
Subsequently, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin proposed the setting up of the Special Committee.
Mr. Bagbin asked the committee to submit its report by September 10, 2023.
Following this, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, COP Alex Mensah and Superintendent George Asare have all appeared before the committee.
For instance, the two police officers have taken on their boss and made a number of accusations against him.
