Human rights activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has called for a more inclusive and holistic approach to addressing the nation’s challenges, criticising the over-centralisation of discussions around the role of police leadership in national affairs.
President John Dramani Mahama relieved Dr George Akuffo Dampare of his duties as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and appointed his deputy, Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as his replacement.
The decision was announced in a press statement issued by the presidency on Thursday, March 13, and signed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show on Friday, March 14, Barker-Vormawor, who is known for his outspoken advocacy on social and political issues, expressed his concerns over the increasing focus on the centralisation of the conversation surrounding the leadership of Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
While acknowledging the importance of leadership within the police service, Barker-Vormawor emphasised that the current discourse fails to address the broader, systemic issues facing the country.
He argued that instead of narrowing the conversation to an individual figurehead, the country needs a comprehensive strategy that addresses the root causes of national problems ranging from governance to socio-economic inequalities.
"I'm interested in a more holistic approach to the nation's problems, one that goes beyond just the over-centralisation of the conversation about the leadership of the IGP," Barker-Vormawor said.
