The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Madina constituency in the Greater Accra Region, who sponsored the "Witchcraft Bill," has expressed dissatisfaction with President Akufo-Addo's decision not to sign the bill into law.
According to the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament's Constitution and Legal Affairs Committee, President Akufo-Addo is engaging in petty politics and disregarding the fundamental human rights of the vulnerable in the country.
In an interview with Metro TV on Tuesday, December 19, the MP emphasised that the President's conduct is untenable and should not be tolerated by Ghanaians.
He believes that President Akufo-Addo is assuming powers that are supposed to be vested in the Speaker of Parliament.
“In my respectful view, the President is unfortunately engaging in petty partisanship politics over the protection of the vulnerable of the country and the fundamental of human rights.”
“He is just constituting himself as the Supreme Court in his own words to protect the sanctity of the legislative process, which powers is the sole preserve of the Speaker of Parliament.”
The NDC MP’s assertion follows President Akufo-Addo’s refusal to sign into law three bills that have been passed by Parliament.
According to the president, some of the bills infringe on the constitution of the republic, hence his refusal to sign those bills.
The bills are two amendments to the Criminal and other Offences Act to criminalise accusations of witchcraft and abolish the death penalty and the Wildlife Resources Bill.
