Former Attorney General, Ayikoi Otoo has voiced concerns regarding the behavior of the Special Prosecutor (SP), Kissi Agyebeng; deeming many of his public statements as unnecessary.
Mr. Otoo expressed dissatisfaction with what he perceives as excessive involvement with the media.
According to him, this attitude diminishes the prestige of the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
During an interview with Accra-based Asaase Radio, Mr. Otoo emphasized the importance of fighting corruption instead of seeking public validation.
“For me, you can work quietly and achieve results. So, you let your results speak for you. This constant holding of press conferences does not augur well for that office. People must show respect to that office.”
“People must hold you in awe that this is the guy fighting corruption. When you are always out there talking, holding press conferences and the rest, you make your office look ordinary. I don’t think Martin Amidu was doing that,” he said.
“So, I’m not happy with the talk, too much of talk and then I have also said elsewhere that, deal with the big issues …” Mr Otoo added.
His remarks follow the recent expression of concern by the OSP regarding the growing trend of dismissive rulings in suspected corruption cases, which it fears might impede the fight against corruption.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng voiced his apprehension about the "growing hasty dismissiveness and lack of regard" for suspected corruption cases.
This, he believes could seriously hinder his office's ability to fulfil its mandate.
Mr Agyebeng highlighted specific cases, including the acquittal of Cecilia Dapaah, a former government official, in a suspected corruption case, and the court's refusal to freeze the estate of the late NPP General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie.
