Authorities at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital have made an appeal for facilities to equip the neonatal care unit (NICU) of the hospital and the children's ward.
According to Paediatrician Dr. Bright Asiamah, a significant number of children admitted to the unit suffer from respiratory infections.
He mentioned that currently, the facility has only eight continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines and seven incubators, but there is a need for more such machines as the facility caters to 100 to 120 babies a month.
The medical practitioner informed Adom News’ Bono regional correspondent, Christian Ofori Kumah, that due to the limited equipment available, the facility records 7 to 8 deaths of babies every month, especially premature babies.
He revealed this during a donation event where the managing director of a State Insurance Company (SIC), Ama Frimpomaah, donated various items to the NICU and children's ward at the teaching hospital.
Meanwhile, Ama Frimpomaah, managing director of the State Insurance Company, donated various items to the NICU and children's ward at the teaching hospital and settled GHC25,000 in bills for mothers who have delivered and their babies still in admission due to illness.
The items donated include baby wipes, diapers, toiletries, detergents, baby food, Nans cartons of milk, cartons of Milo, and others.
Speaking to the media, she highlighted what motivated her to donate and appealed to the general public to contribute cash and equipment to support the facility.
