A Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande is dissatisfied with the Electoral Commission's (EC) decision to decline the party's request for a live telecast of today's Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting.
According to him, this decision undermines confidence in the electoral process, especially as the NDC has been raising concerns over inaccuracies in the voter register.
"The EC has just demonstrated zero tolerance for transparency which falls short of its core mandate to be transparent to the people of Ghana."
Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on Friday, September 6, 2024, Mr Gbande pointed out that the EC's refusal to televise the meeting raises concerns about transparency as the country heads into the upcoming elections.
In reply to the NDC, the Commission emphasised that the concerns raised did not warrant such coverage.
Mr Gbande further explained that the way the EC has admitted to errors in the voter register suggests a potential cover-up.
He claimed that the Commission had been exposed and questioned whether the EC intended to hold Friday's meeting, given their refusal to allow a live broadcast.
"Why didn’t the Commission own up for its mistakes only for the NDC to discover it while the NPP was sleeping," he quizzed.
Meanwhile, the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has also identified discrepancies in the electoral register ahead of the IPAC meeting.
The NDC Deputy General Secretary insisted that they will present more evidence to demonstrate that the voter register is not fit for purpose.
He emphasised that its only aim is to ensure a free, fair, and credible voter register to guarantee a smooth election on December 7.
