The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has announced that a request by the Chiefs and People of the Ho Municipal Assembly for a metropolitan status is under review.
This follows an affirmation by the Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia during the commissioning of the Ho Municipal Assembly in October 2024.
“I have been talking to the Minister for Local Government and I am happy to say that works are far on the way and very soon we will have Ho [Municipality] declared a Metro”, he assured.
The upgrading of the municipality has been a bargaining chip for both the governing NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress.
The NDC's Volta Regional Chairman, Mawutor Agbavitor promised the elation of the Municipality as a key objective on the agenda of the next NDC government.
The statement signed by the sector minister, Martin Adjei–Mensah Korsah listed that the Offinso North and Birim North districts were under consideration to be upgraded to municipalities.
It also communicated the upgrade of 15 districts and municipalities and the consideration of petitions for the creation of new districts across the country.
The Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, Gomoa East District Assembly, and Techiman Municipal Assembly have been elevated to Metropolitan status.
Twelve other District Assemblies which included Bole District Assembly, Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly, Atwima Kwanwoma District Assembly, Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly, Obuasi East District Assembly, and Sekyere South District Assembly have been upgraded to Municipalities.
The rest are Ningo Prampram District Assembly, Anloga District Assembly, South Tongu District Assembly, Shama District Assembly, Techiman North District Assembly, and Pru East District Assembly.
