In a significant announcement today, October 2, 2021, Ghana’s Ministry of Arts, Tourism, and Culture unveiled the shortlist for this year’s National Creative Arts Award, spotlighting 50 of the nation's most gifted artists and their compelling artworks that celebrate and preserve Ghanaian heritage.

In the top nominations is Kwame Akoto for his sculpture “Ancestral Whisper,” which uses reclaimed wood and metal to reflect the resilience and enduring spirit of Ghanaian ancestry. Efua Sutherland with her digital art series “Folklore Futures,” which reimagines Ghanaian folk tales in futuristic settings.

Among the esteemed finalists is also Amina Kassim, a renowned artist known for her vibrant paintings that depict Ghanaian cultural scenes, particularly in the diaspora. Her interesting artworks like Myth of New Birth, Bathroom Salon and Game Night depicting not only Ghanaian culture but the stories of African Immigrants in foreign lands are very captivating.

Isaac Mensah and his installation “Echoes of History,” comprising audio-visual elements that narrate the story of Ghana from colonial times to the present. Sara Mensah is recognized for her textile design “Weaves of Time,” which incorporates ancient weaving techniques with contemporary fashion.

The criteria for this year’s awards were stringent, focusing on impact on cultural preservation, and the ability to inspire both local and international audiences. Artists were nominated through a rigorous process involving community arts leaders, gallery owners, and previous award recipients.

The Ministry also outlined the evaluation process, which includes public exhibitions and a final review by a panel of esteemed judges from various art disciplines. This panel will assess the works based on their artistic excellence, the depth of cultural representation, and the narrative strength of each piece.

The winners of the National Creative Arts Award will be announced next month at a gala event in Accra, which will also feature performances from some of Ghana’s top cultural troupes.

The event not only aims to honour these artists but also to foster a deeper appreciation for Ghana’s rich artistic heritage within the country and across the globe.
