The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) has intensified efforts to educate young people on firearm safety and gun violence prevention through school-based public education programmes.

The Commission recently engaged students of Nungua Senior High School in the Greater Accra Region and Ghana Senior High School (GHANASS) in the Eastern Region, where participants received practical education on firearm safety, preventing gun violence and responsible citizenship.

According to the Commission in a social media post on Monday, August 10, the sessions sought to help students understand how peer influence, exposure to firearms and unresolved conflicts could contribute to unsafe situations in schools and communities.

Students were encouraged to make responsible choices, avoid violent behaviour and seek appropriate assistance when confronted with suspicious activities, firearms-related incidents or potential threats.

NACSA said young people had an important role to play in efforts to prevent gun violence and promote safer communities.

The Commission noted that equipping students with the knowledge to identify risks and respond appropriately could help reduce exposure to firearm-related dangers in schools and communities.

Through the school-based engagements, NACSA is positioning young people as active partners in promoting peace, responsible citizenship and safer school environments.
