The Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, has condemned the actions of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on election day, accusing them of openly engaging in vote buying and undermining the integrity of the electoral process.
In an interview with the press after casting his vote, Mr Iddrisu criticised the NPP for turning elections into a transaction, where money was used as an inducement to sway voters.
According to him, such actions are a clear violation of electoral laws and a shameful affront to democracy.
"Now you see that on election day, it is no longer an offense, under the NPP, to buy votes openly and to demonstrate that elections are all about the payment of money. That’s inducement, and that’s a criminal act under electoral laws," he stated.
The former Minority Leader expressed outrage over the conduct, saying it was a disgrace to the country's governance under President Akufo-Addo's leadership.
Mr Iddrisu also referenced an incident at a polling station in Tamale where NPP supporters were reportedly chased away for attempting to distribute money to voters, calling the act "unacceptable" and "very shameful."
"It’s a shame that Nana Addo will subject this country to these low levels of governance. This shouldn’t happen in a democracy," he added.
