The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has demanded justice for a teacher who was tragically stabbed in the left eye by a student at Asuoso Senior High School in Offinso, Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred when the teacher, Ishmael Famous, asked the student to return to the classroom after he had been loitering.

In a shocking act of violence, the student, whose identity has been withheld, attacked the teacher, leaving him with the loss of one eye.

GNAT is calling on the police to take swift legal action against the student, insisting that the teacher, who sustained serious injuries while performing his duties, should be entitled to Workmen’s Compensation.

The General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah, stressed that under the law, anyone injured while carrying out their professional responsibilities is entitled to compensation. “The law stipulates that if someone is harmed while performing their duties, they are entitled to compensation,” he remarked.

Musah also expressed his frustration over efforts by some individuals in the local community to have the matter treated lightly, warning that failure to act could lead to significant repercussions.

He further threatened that if the authorities do not take appropriate action, teachers across the country might consider withdrawing their services when schools resume after the Christmas break.

"We cannot let this go unaddressed," he said, stressing the importance of justice for the victim.

The attack has left the teacher with permanent damage to his left eye, and Musah highlighted the long-term implications for the teacher’s career. “This is devastating for him. As a teacher, you need your eyes to do your job effectively.

Now, with one eye lost, his ability to work has been severely compromised,” he explained. The GNAT official also raised concerns about the financial burden of the teacher’s medical treatment, asking, "Who will take care of his medical bills and his livelihood going forward?"

Musah further clarified that the incident occurred on November 18, 2024, when the teacher instructed the student to re-enter the classroom.

With the teacher’s career now in jeopardy, GNAT is calling for the necessary legal and institutional actions to be taken against the student and to ensure that the teacher is properly compensated for his injuries.
