Democracy Hub has announced its active participation in the upcoming Council of State elections as part of its commitment to advancing constitutional reform in Ghana.
The organisation, known for championing bold governance reforms, is sponsoring candidates who align with its vision for transformative change.
"To ensure that the Council does not obstruct progress, Democracy Hub is participating in the upcoming elections by supporting candidates who share our vision for transformative governance," Democracy Hub stated.
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 23, the group stated that while it has consistently advocated for the abolition of the Council of State, which it considers ineffective in its advisory role, it acknowledges the body's crucial role in the constitutional amendment process.
Democracy Hub stated that under current laws, all constitutional amendment bills must be reviewed by the Council of State, making its composition critical to the success or failure of reform efforts.
“Our participation is not a contradiction of our reformist ideals. Instead, it is a pragmatic move to safeguard the path toward a better future,” part of the statement read.
“By backing leaders committed to justice, equity, and constitutional reform, we aim to transform the Council into a force that champions the interests of the people rather than an obstacle to progress.”
The organisation noted that the non-partisan nature of the elections is central to its participation, ensuring that the Council remains a space for independent thought and wisdom, free from political party influence.
Democracy Hub reiterated its long-term goal of abolishing the Council of State as part of broader governance reforms.
However, it views its current involvement in the elections as a strategic move to prevent the Council from becoming a roadblock to progress.
The group called on all Ghanaians to actively engage in the election process, demand accountability, and support candidates who reflect shared values.
“Together, we will not only safeguard the journey toward constitutional reform but also ensure that no institution—ineffective or otherwise—can derail our collective pursuit of a better Ghana,” the statement added.
