Morocco and Iraq have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and fostering deeper cooperation across various sectors.
This renewed determination was stressed during discussions in Rabat between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom.
The talks focused on advancing diplomatic and economic ties to meet the aspirations of both nations.
Both ministers expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in relations and underscored their shared commitment to expanding collaboration, particularly by promoting investment and sharing Morocco’s expertise with Iraq.
A key milestone in this renewed partnership was the reopening of the Moroccan Embassy in Iraq on January 28, 2023, after 18 years.
This move, led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, reflects Morocco’s firm dedication to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Iraq.
As part of this commitment, the two ministers agreed to hold the first round of political consultations at the earliest opportunity, paving the way for the Morocco-Iraq Joint Commission to convene.
They also signed a memorandum of understanding granting mutual visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic passports from both countries.
On regional and international matters, Bourita and Hussein emphasized the importance of ongoing consultation and coordination, particularly on Arab and global issues of mutual interest.
They reaffirmed their steadfast support for the Palestinian cause, advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the June 1967 borders, with East Al-Quds as its capital.
The meeting marked a significant step toward revitalizing Morocco-Iraq relations, signalling a shared vision for enhanced cooperation and strengthened diplomatic ties.
