The government has announced that the 77th anniversary of the Christiansborg Crossroads Shooting will be commemorated on Friday, February 28, 2025.
The tragic incident, which occurred on February 28, 1948, is remembered as a heroic act of defiance against colonial rule.
It saw three unarmed ex-servicemen—Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey—fatally shot by Superintendent Colin Imray while leading a peaceful march to Osu Castle.
The ex-servicemen, who had fought in World War II as part of the Gold Coast Regiment of the Royal West African Frontier Force, were demanding their rightful compensation from the British authorities.
Their deaths ignited nationwide protests, fueling the independence movement and strengthening the resolve of nationalists, including the Big Six, to push for self-rule.
Their sacrifice played a crucial role in Ghana’s eventual independence on March 6, 1957.
This year’s commemoration, held under the theme “Reflect, Review, Reset,” serves as a reminder of the bravery of Ghana’s forefathers and continues to inspire future generations.
The event also marks the beginning of activities leading up to Independence Day celebrations.
