France has reaffirmed its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, describing its position as “unwavering.”
In a statement issued Tuesday by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, following a meeting between French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Paris reiterated the stance previously expressed by President Emmanuel Macron in a letter to King Mohammed VI dated July 30, 2024.
“For France, the present and future of Western Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,” the statement read.
It added that France is committed to acting “consistently with this position at both the national and international levels.”
Minister Barrot also reiterated France’s “clear and consistent support” for Morocco’s autonomy plan, describing it as “the only framework within which this issue should be resolved” and “the sole basis for a political solution.”
He noted the “growing international consensus” backing the autonomy initiative and stated that France intends to actively contribute to that momentum.
France also reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s efforts to promote economic and social development in the southern provinces, highlighting various measures taken in that direction and expressing its willingness to continue working with Rabat on this front.
