One person is in police custody tonight following the discovery of an illegal mining site at Aowin Nkwanta in the Western North Region.
The was arrested today by the special anti-galamsey police team during a targeted intelligence led operation in Nkrankrom village in the western region.
The police team intercepted a pickup truck with an unlisted registration number and questioned the driver, was unable to justify his presence in the forested area.

After sustained interrogation, he led police to a vast illegal mining site deep within the forest at Aowin Nkwanta, where he admitted to operating.
Police have since secured the site, and the suspect is currently assisting with investigations. More searches will be carried out in the coming days, with efforts underway to retrieve excavators and other mining equipment believed to be hidden in the area.
The operation forms part of intensified nationwide efforts to clamp down on illegal mining and preserve Ghana’s natural environment.
