Former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, says the conviction of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, signals the end of political protection for persons involved in illegal mining.

According to him, the 20-year prison sentence handed to Wontumi over illegal mining-related offences demonstrates that individuals engaged in galamsey can no longer rely on political connections to avoid accountability.

Speaking on JoyNews' The Pulse on Tuesday, July 21, Mr Fuseini said the development represents a significant moment in Ghana's fight against illegal mining.

"History has been made. Anybody engaged in illegal mining activities can no longer have political insurance in perpetuity. The political insurance obtained by Bernard Antwi Boasiako expired on the 7th of December 2024," Mr Fuseini stated.

He added "anybody who is engaged in illegal mining activities and associated with NDC should know that a time when his politicsal insurance will expire."

Mr Fuseini recalled that concerns about activities involving Akonta Mining Limited in the Samreboi concession were raised during the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He said the then Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, wrote to Akonta Mining after advice from the Minerals Commission, drawing attention to alleged illegal activities and requesting that the company desist.

According to him, the former President's subsequent comments appeared to exonerate Wontumi, a move he believes raised questions about leadership and accountability.

Mr Fuseini further urged President Mahama to use the momentum from the case to intensify the fight against illegal mining, arguing that galamsey has caused severe damage to Ghana's forests, water bodies and livelihoods.

He called for all persons involved in illegal mining, regardless of their political affiliation, to face accountability.
