Caterers under the Ghana School Feeding Programme have announced plans to petition the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, seeking his intervention following the termination of their contracts by the Mahama administration.
On 2 May 2025, the contracts of all caterers involved in the programme were terminated, with no official clarification on when new contracts would be issued. While authorities have pledged to pay outstanding arrears, no definitive timeline has been communicated.
Speaking in an interview on Citi FM, Madam Margaret Larbi, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the National School Feeding Caterers Association, revealed that the group is turning to traditional and religious leaders to help mediate the matter.
“Our President has instructed us to send petitions, and we are trying to contact Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, for his intervention,” she said.
Madam Larbi also disclosed plans to reach out to the National Chief Imam, Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu.
“We are hoping the Chief Imam can intercede on our behalf. Tomorrow [Friday, 9 May], we will be sending petitions to other key individuals who can speak for us,” she added.
At a recent press conference, the association's President, Gifty Asamoah, stated that members had procured foodstuffs based on the government's earlier agreement.
"We are not asking for contract renewal, but rather permission to cook the food until the end of the academic year to access our arrears," she explained.
