The Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Hon. Elikplim Akurugu, has called for urgent government intervention to tackle persistent flooding in the constituency following a deadly downpour on Sunday, May 18, 2025, that claimed the life of a resident.
During a meeting with the Minister for Works and Housing, Hon. Gilbert Kenneth Adjei, on May 21 in Accra, the MP emphasized the dire impact of recurring floods, particularly in low-lying areas of the constituency.
She described Dome Kwabenya’s vulnerability due to its location at the base of the Akuapem Range, where the Odaw River originates.
To address the issue, Hon. Akurugu proposed the construction of a detention pond to capture runoff from the range and the development of storm drains to control water flow. She also urged the Ministry to initiate dredging and desilting of major drains and rivers to prevent overflow during heavy rains.
The Minister for Works and Housing acknowledged the severity of the situation and assured the MP of the Ministry’s commitment to finding lasting solutions.
He pledged to consult the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, to facilitate the release of land from the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) for the proposed detention pond.
The meeting marks a significant step in addressing the long-standing flooding challenges in Dome Kwabenya, with hopes for swift and sustained action.
